Interventions for Gastro-intestinal Issues – Deteriorating Resident Clinical Decision Tool

Check the bowel chart.
Isolate resident and use protective precautions.
Collect stool specimen for culture.
Monitor hydration – fluid balance chart.
If diabetic – monitor BGL.
Monitor urine output and concentration.
If urine output low +/- concentrated, refer to Dehydration.
If not passing wind or too drowsy to swallow, keep nil by mouth until medical review.
If passing wind and can tolerate fluids, encourage oral fluid intake with small amounts (10-30mls) every 15 minutes, as tolerated.
Consider an oral rehydration solution.
